Background Information
Like humans, the pig is a placental mammal, meaning that the fetus receives nourishment from the mother through the umbilical cord. Because the anatomy of the fetal pig resembles that of other placentals, this laboratory serves two important functions. It provides the framework for understanding functioning body systems.
Read and follow the procedure carefully. Accompanying diagrams are designed to provide reference only. Use the appropriate dissecting instruments. This and the following lab have been designed to minimize the use of a scalpel.
Objective
To study the external anatomy and organ systems of the abdominal cavity of the fetal pig

Safety Notes
- Wear safety goggles and an apron at all times.
- Wear plastic gloves when handling the preserved specimen and when performing a dissection to prevent any chemicals from coming in contact with your skin
- Fetal pigs are preserved in a formalin-based or other preservative solution. Wash all splashes off your skin and clothing immediately. If you get any chemical in your eyes, rinse for at least 15 minutes.
- Work in a well-ventilated area. Do not place your face directly over the dissecting tray in order to reduce your exposure to any fumes from the preservative.
- Always cut away from yourself and others sitting near you in case the scalpel slips.
- When you have finished the activities, clean your work area, wash your hands thoroughly, and dispose of all specimens, chemicals, and materials as instructed by your teacher
